08/27/2010

Cape Girardeau County
Sheriff's Department

NEWS RELEASE
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

FROM: SHERIFF JOHN JORDAN

DATE: August 27, 2010

Around noon today another suspicious barn fire was reported to the Sheriff's Office. The owner of the barn reported he went out to his farm today and observed a small barn located very near the roadway on Cape Girardeau County road # 462 had been burned to the ground some time during the night. The Millersville Fire Department was called to the scene to extinguish what was left of the barn. There was no power connected to the barn and nothing of any major value was inside at the time of the fire. We are calling the fire an arson fire at this time.

Just last week a barn and a house about a mile down the road on county road #459 was also burned to the ground and it is believed those two fires were also started by an arsonist.

In reviewing reports of other suspicious fires in the last month an a half it is believed an arsonist is operating in the area north of Jackson, south of the Appleton area to just west of Fruitland, Missouri.

A shed fire was reported in July North of Oak Ridge, Missouri just of State Hwy D and a barn fire was reported on County road #439 just off Route FF near Fruitland, Missouri.

We are also still investigating the arson fire at the Delta High School in Delta, Missouri.

We are asking for public assistance at this time and if anyone knows of any suspicious activity that may be related to the fires or information that may lead to the arrest and conviction of an arsonist. Contact the Cape Girardeau County Sheriff's Office 573-243-3551.
