Can the Sheriff's Office fingerprint me for my job?
Yes. The Sheriff's Office provides fingerprinting for job applications, licenses, and other necessary purposes.

Solicitation & Donations

Does the Sheriff's Office solicit money by phone?
No. The Sheriff's Office never solicits money by phone. If you receive a call requesting money for the Sheriff's Office, it is likely a scam.
The only legitimate request for support comes from the Missouri Sheriff's Association (MSA), which may send donation requests by mail only-never by phone.


Community Programs & Crime Prevention

Does the Sheriff's Office have any community-oriented crime prevention programs?
Yes! The Sheriff's Office has a School Resource Officer (SRO) at Nell Holcomb R-IV School District and participates in community events, training sessions, and public speaking engagements upon request.


Obtaining Police Reports

When can I get a copy of a police report?
Typically, reports are available within 5 to 7 business days. However, some reports require approval from the Prosecuting Attorney's Office based on the Missouri Sunshine Law.


Reporting Crimes

Can I report a crime that occurred a year ago?
Yes, but the time limit depends on the type of crime:

  • Felony crimes: Generally have a 3-year statute of limitations (some, like murder and rape, have no limit).
  • Misdemeanor crimes: Typically have a 1-year statute of limitations.

Will the Sheriff's Office check my residence while I am out of town?
Yes! The Sheriff's Office offers vacation checks as part of its preventative patrol program.

Animal Control

Does Cape Girardeau County have animal control ordinances?
No. Cape Girardeau County does not have specific animal control ordinances. Complaints must be handled under Missouri State Law.


Methamphetamine Labs

What should I do if I find a meth lab on my property?
DO NOT touch or disturb it! Meth labs contain hazardous chemicals and are considered hazardous materials sites by the federal government.
Call the Sheriff's Office immediately at (573) 243-3551.
‍ Only certified personnel can safely dispose of meth labs.

How do I find out if a sex offender lives in my neighborhood?
Check the Sex Offender Registry on our website for updated information on offenders, their locations, and offenses.


Concealed Carry Weapons (CCW) Permit Renewal

How do I renew my CCW permit?
CCW permits must be renewed every 3 years.
Bring the following to the Sheriff's Office:

  • Your CCW identification
  • Renewal letter from the Department of Revenue
    Fee: $50 renewal fee
    If your CCW is expired by more than 60 days, additional fees may apply.
